Three Weeks for Dreamwidth is a celebration of the platform's anniversary, running April 25-May 15. During this time, people post content only visible on Dreamwidth (although it can be reposted elsewhere after the event ends). There's usually a flurry of activity as bloggers share anchor posts, new fiction, icons, banners, questionnaires, friending fests, memes, and other goodies. Community hosts often hold special activities in their communities too. Watch your reading page for more festivities.

This year I'm planning to focus on questions and questionnaires as a means of building community. That'll create a few good anchor posts along with the daily question posts.

This is a challenge to make fifty posts about fandom things. They can be whatever kind of posts you’d like - movie reviews, recs, a story about meeting a fellow fan, cosplaying … anything!
The challenge runs for a year (well, 11 months), so a pace of one post per week plus a couple would do it.

A little while ago I was complaining about the new Inbox and Create Entries pages (currently in beta, soon to become the only option). I find them rather ugly and difficult to navigate, and I know several other people feel the same way. Well, I have been learning to use the Stylus browser extension, which lets you apply custom CSS to modify the appearance of web pages, and here is my new custom style sheet to make the new inbox look as much like the old inbox as I can!

2023 Word of the Year Is “Enshittification”

The American Dialect Society, in its 34th annual words-of-the-year vote, selected “enshittification” as the Word of the Year for 2023. More than three hundred attendees took part in the deliberations and voting, in an event hosted in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America’s annual meeting.

The term enshittification became popular in 2023 after it was used in a blog post by author Cory Doctorow, who used it to describe how digital platforms can become worse and worse. “Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die. I call this enshittification,” Doctorow wrote on his Pluralistic blog.

So that's a word that most folks need nowadays. >_<

Dreamwidth uses icons to identify users and express ideas. An icon is a 100x100 pixel image that appears when you make a post or a comment. It can be always the same image, deliberately chosen to match the topic, or random. reddit_refugees was created on June 23, 2023 as a response to the Reddit Exodus. Here people can learn how to use Dreamwidth, figure out how to do here what they used to do there, and search for their friends from Reddit. It's also a good resource for newcomers to DW in general.
